first post of the year (oops!)

I am now going to try to keep up this blog again! I doubt anyone reads it, but hopefully it'll make me feel better.

So far, this year has been going ok. Remember those terrible kindergartners from last year? Well, now they are terrible first graders. I have had my hands full dealing with a couple of severe behavior problems. One of these students has Down's Syndrome and has a para with her at all times. Her behavior problems, however, have nothing to do with her disability. With uneducated parents at home, she has been running the household with no discipline for 7 years. She is at the level of a 3-year-old, which means temper tantrums and pouting when she doesn't get her way. For a first-time para, this is a difficult task. The para is not picking up on it very quickly, and cannot control this child.

My other student has some psychological issues that go far beyond the classroom. I try to keep in mind that I can only control what goes on within these four walls, but it is difficult when I know what goes on at home. I have tried everything I can think of with this student. We have made a behavior plan for her. She is no longer running away from the classroom when she gets in trouble (a HUGE step up from last year and the beginning of this year). I have created a "Safe Place" for her, under a table with a tablecloth. She knows that when she goes under the table, she has 5 minutes to cool down. When the timer goes off, she must come out without me asking her. If she doesn't, she knows that's when she gets in trouble. She also has to fill out a piece of paper while she's there, explaining how she feels, etc. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it! I also have created a feelings chart on her desk with magnets. If she feels sad, she chooses the magnet that says "sad" and places in the box. There are about 8 different feelings, and it's her secret way of communicating to me. There is also a behavior chart on her desk. The day is broken down into 4 time segments. She has 4 chances to get a sticker throughout the day, with a reward after each. This way, if she messes up first thing in the morning, she still has three chances to get a reward. She had two weeks in a row that she got all her stickers, so this week we moved it down to only two time segments. I was so excited to see that she still got all her stickers! She is making so much progress, and I can't wait to see how she grows the rest of the year.

Other than these two students, I think I have the rest of them under control! In the beginning, it was very difficult, but I feel like we've made a lot of progress. I was told by the music teacher that last year everyone would have said I deserved teacher of the year. I was confused because no one had ever said anything to me like that. So I asked who would have recommended me for that. He said, "Everyone. All the teachers. They all recognized what you did with that group of students." Then he went on to tell me that even this year, there is an obvious difference in the way my students act when compared to the other two first grade classes. He also told my husband that these students last year were awful, and no one knew what they would do with them. He said that he's impressed with what I've done with such a crazy group of kids. I guess it's hard to see the progress when it's gradual and you see the same students every day. But for a teacher who sees all students, K-6, I felt very honored that he could tell the difference.

is it over yet?

Less than a week away from summer break! It could not come any sooner. The kids are absolutely drained. They are shutting down right before my eyes. I'm doing the same. I don't want to teach. I just want to sit around and let the kids self-teach :) I actually am frantically trying to get the end-of-year stuff done. We have to do inventory of every single item in our rooms, do a whole LOT of testing on the kids, and lots more stuff! Each student gets a folder that we send on to the next grade. In it, we have to put test scores, copies of grade cards, writing samples, etc. etc. It is a pain! Hopefully I can get everything done this week and use next week to focus on packing for MEXICO!

No, it's actually NOT ok to let your kindergartners run down the hall screaming when they get in from recess. With no structure in the classroom, it's no wonder why they're so terrible. I'm going to have fun next year...

tests, tests, and more tests!

This week we have been giving the Terra Nova test to our students. We took Reading on Tuesday and Math today. So far, it's gone really well. I've been very impressed with all my students and their abilities to take standardized tests. I probably over-prepared them with rules and different strategies, but it seems to be working for them! The hardest part is getting them to NOT write in their test booklet except to answer questions. Most of them like to doodle in their book when they get finished. I threatened them during our prep week and said I would not go back and erase their marks, I would just let them get the question wrong. I think this has helped out a lot!

We are also taking Social Studies and Science this year. I'm not expecting much out of them during these parts. Half of my students miss Social Studies/Science time anyway because they get extra reading help during that time. Hopefully they will exceed my expectations tomorrow and Friday!


On a non-school-related note, I'm looking into buying a house! Today we go look at it and see what it's like on the inside. If all goes well, we might buy it in the next month or so. It's crazy to think I would buy a house HERE of all places, but with nowhere to rent except crappy apartments, it may be our best bet. It's only $25,000. The owners live in Texas, and inherited it from their mother. They basically just want to get rid of it. So if we offer $15,000 and get it for around $20,000, I would be perfectly pleased! Hopefully when we go in today we won't find a nasty inside that needs a lot of work. Keep your fingers crossed!

Definitely a Monday

I was surprised to come back from the weekend to find an extremely good note from the substitute:

"Everything has gone very well today! I'm very impressed with your class. Your notes were great and very helpful. Thanks for having me, I'd love to do it again sometime. P.S. I don't know if you do any type of reward for good behavior with subs, but THIS group deserves it! (That's the first time I've suggested this, so be proud of your students!)"

Unfortunately they weren't able to keep that up today. I definitely let them know how proud I was of them for Friday though.

The kids were good in music, and the music teacher gave them each two Hershey Kisses. One student put his hand in his pocket and pulled it out with chocolate all over it. He was upset that his chocolate melted because he wanted to eat it--not because it made a mess. I told him, "Well, I guess now you know for next time that chocolate melts so don't put it in your pocket!" As they were walking out the door, his friend behind him said, "Hey! You should just turn your pocket inside out and lick it off!" ...the thought process of a first grader...
